Dear friends and supporters,
It is with mixed emotions that we write to let you know that Croham Hurst Good Neighbours (CHGN) is now winding down its operations after many years of service to our community. Our charity was established in 1972, and for more than five decades we have been privileged to help vulnerable and isolated residents in the Croham and South Croydon area with practical support, friendship and a sense of belonging.
Croham Hurst Good Neighbours has been part of the community for many decades, and during that time our volunteers have supported local residents in many different ways – from the shopping bus and transport to appointments, to befriending visits, practical help and social events. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed their time, energy and kindness over the years.
In recent years, however, the way people organise their daily lives has changed considerably. In particular, the growth of online shopping since the Covid pandemic has reduced the need for services such as our shopping bus. At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to match volunteers with those in need of support in a reliable and effective way. In addition, changes in government funding arrangements and the way support services are now delivered have meant that other organisations are increasingly better placed to provide assistance. Taking all of this into account, the trustees have concluded that the charity’s role has naturally come to an end.
Although we will no longer be running services, our contact details will remain active for a period of time. During this transition we will do our best to respond to enquiries and, where possible, help point people in the right direction or suggest other organisations that may be able to assist.
Croham Hurst Good Neighbours has long been part of the Croydon Neighbourhood Care Association (CNCA) network. Residents seeking further advice or support may also wish to contact CNCA, which continues to coordinate neighbourhood care groups across the borough.
Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers, supporters, donors and local residents who have been part of this journey. It has been a privilege to serve the community, and we are proud of what has been achieved together over the years.
With sincere thanks and best wishes,
Croham Hurst Good Neighbours
